Chapter 10- Post 1

Creativity is defined as going beyond the current boundaries of technology, knowledge, social norms, or beliefs (Harris & Sherblom, 2011, p. 162). In terms of groups, trying something new, invoking new perceptions, or providing a new response are considered creating approaches to problem solving. Creative interaction is beneficial to a group as it expands the possibilities of a product, a way of doing something, or a way of seeing things. I have found this theory to be true, based on my own personal experiences and experiences working in groups. This seems to be especially true in competitive scenarios, such as when groups are competing against each other. This is due to the fact that when multiple people and/or groups are competing for a common goal, uniqueness and originality are factors that cause for one to stand out among the rest. Such as in high school when my friend and I won a costume contest for the originality of our costumes. In the end, it definitely pays to think outside the box, especially in group settings as teamwork is a creative process.

  1. Hi Daisy,

I really liked your post and I liked the way you looked at creativity. “Creativity is defined as going beyond the current boundaries of technology, knowledge, social norms, or beliefs.” This quote explains crreativity because it is going above and beyond. It is looking at something regular and going a little extra to make it unique. I think when it comes to being in a group is havving a diverse group of people. When you have a variety of thinkers, they can create thought and build upon thoughts other have. That is a great point you made about competetiveness and creatvity because that also can play a big part. When you have to compete against someine it becomes imperitive that your product or project is a step above and that much more nicer and original. To be considered creative I think it’s a way people see the world and to see what is and what it could be.

  2. Hi Daisy! Good job with this discussion. I definitely agree with Micah and how you defined your interpretation of creativity. Creativity means thinking outside the box. Your post included each point the book touched upon. You also did a great job including scenarios when creativity would need to take place. That also gave me a different perspective of when creativity can be used. On another turn, you included an example that many people can relate to. Many people can go to the store and buy costumes, but only really creative people can create a fan-favorite costume. For groups to gain an extra step ahead of the competition, creativity must be present within the group.

  3. To just bounce off what the others said, the way you defined creativity was some really liked. Also, how creative interaction is beneficial to the group is something I really liked. I play on a basketball team and this year we took the approach of interacting more between the coach and the players so we could in some way be more of a cohesive unit. It so far has looked like it’s been helping my team. The chemistry we’ve built this summer and fall has been great and you could really see the difference now that we have been interacting with each other more. When plays don’t go right or we see something that the coach maybe can’t see since he isn’t actually playing are things we have been able to tell our coach to help better chances of a winning season.
